Overview

Minerals in urine crystallise into stones. Small stones often pass with fluids and medicines; larger ones block urine flow.

A CT scan shows their size and position. Lasers (ureteroscopy, RIRS) or keyhole surgery (PCNL) remove stones without open surgery.

Symptoms

  • Severe pain in the side or back
  • Blood in the urine
  • Burning on passing urine
  • Nausea and vomiting

Causes

Not drinking enough water, hot climate, diet high in salt, and family history.
