Overview

The heart has four valves that keep blood moving in one direction. Rheumatic fever, age-related calcium deposits or infection can damage them.

An echocardiogram shows how severe the problem is. Severe disease is treated by valve repair or replacement, by open surgery or through a catheter (TAVI).

Symptoms

  • Breathlessness, especially lying flat
  • Swollen ankles
  • Palpitations
  • Fainting or dizziness

Causes

Rheumatic heart disease, ageing, congenital defects and infective endocarditis.
