Overview

The natural lens slowly becomes cloudy with age. Glasses help for a while, but surgery is the only cure.

In phacoemulsification the cloudy lens is removed through a tiny cut and replaced with a clear artificial lens. Most people go home the same day.

Symptoms

  • Blurred or cloudy vision
  • Glare from lights at night
  • Faded colours
  • Frequent change of glasses

Causes

Ageing, diabetes, long-term steroid use, eye injury and sun exposure.
